What does group by album artist mean

You will have to select all the tracks for a given album and find the option to change the Album Artist for all tracks. If using MP3 tagging software , refer to the table above to decide which tags names to set. Your tagger may obfuscate the underlying tag name that is being written to. If this is the case, you may have to do a little more research to ensure the tag name is correct. Once the tagging is complete, typically you must tell your music player to 'rescan'.

This makes the music player re-read your music files, picking up the change in Album Artist you applied earlier. This is a lot of manual work, and it's something that needs to be done again and again as you add music. This is another area where a rule based music manager is useful. Sep 12, PM in response to turingtest2 In response to turingtest2 Yeah, I see what you mean with the sort field. What is the purpose of "Album Artist" again? Is it really necessary to fill all Album Artist fields? I'm sure there is a reason, but I'm just not sure what it is. It seems fairly straight forward with anything other than Classical.

What does adding "Various Artists" to that field accomplish in terms of helping to keep things organized, versus leaving the field blank? Sep 13, AM in response to turingtest2 In response to turingtest2 tt2, What do you do for soundtracks?

Do you treat soundtracks differently? Do you treat them as compilations? User profile for user: turingtest2 turingtest2. You don't have to fill them all in, at least not if the Artist value is the same for each track, though personally I think it's neater if you do.

In fact in my view it almost goes the other way around. The album artist ought to be filled in for every album, and you could assume the track artist was the same unless told differently. But the iPod won't work like that so I find it best to complete them all. Without something in the Album Artist field, or the part of a compilation field set and the Group Compilations option turned on, the album will break up into separate groups.

So I complete all the fields accordingly. What do you do for soundtracks? Generaly I treat soundtracks as compilations but Blade Runner by Vangelis is an obvious exception that comes to mind. In the end it is down to personal preference. Sep 13, PM in response to turingtest2 In response to turingtest2 tt2, This is great stuff, which is truly appreciated.

While we're at it, I thought I might get your insight into Genres. I have always found it nearly impossible to neatly group rock songs as a genre.

There are so many variations regarding style, etc. I have been back and forth doing it one way, changing it, changing it back, changing it again, etc, etc. I don't think there is an easy solution to this "problem". Some songs are very easy to group as "Alternative" or "Country", or "Pop", etc However, others really don't seem to fit into anything specific, yet leaving them as just, "Rock" really doesn't do it justice either.

Ideally, you want a system which groups your music of similar style together. This is a very difficult task, but any insights you might have would be greatly appreciated. I have thought of using "Rock" as the genre for all songs that seem like "Rock" songs, and then further classifying them using the "Grouping" field. This works to a certain degree, but doesn't really separate things on the iPod, deeming it all Rock. On the other hand, by cleverly using the "Grouping" field, you could break down a bunch a "rock" smart playlists based on the grouping info associated with each song.

This works to a certain degree, but is still very difficult, as songs have such subtle variation. So, in your opinion, is it best to utilize the "Genre" field, or is it best to forget it, giving songs a generalized genre grouping and then using the "Grouping" field to further organize?

I use the Genre field as the general categorization and put sub-genres in the Comments field, then use smart playlists to pick up certain sub-genres. Incoming music aside I have about 2 TB of music that would need tag updating just to get the existing collection sorted. All said the music I'm bringing in is tagged to standard and shouldn't need further work.

Or maybe I'm just not understanding what you mean? I will post my Plex setup tonight but here is what I did with MB: So just to exaggerate my point i made a "collection" as you would call it in Plex by changing the sort album artist for that Doors album and I named it Sting.

Nice of MB to pickup an artist image for me So that shows me I can ultimately do what I want except it's going to require me to add this "sting" sort album artist tag for each and every Doors Bon Jovi, Sting etc track I acquire. Considering the volume I manage it's just a good chunk of work for something that Plex is offering as a one-and-done task for every Album Artist. Sorry if I'm adding confusion here - I know exactly what I want and even though it seems so basic in my head I obviously struggle to explain it!

Last Edit: March 28, , PM by musicmahn. Reply 6 on: March 28, , PM. Reply 7 on: March 28, , PM. Unless sorting tags are already present in the incoming media, that much makes sense. This is what I currently have: Is this close to correct? I only want the album artist to sort however - as there are times a given Artist may appear on a release from a different album artist so what I mean is I would want it to stick with the album artist routing in all cases.

What is the deal with the checkmarks and why does the "artist sort by" auto populate itself with what I entered as the "album artist sort by"?? I suppose the latter won't matter much if my main method of browsing will be with album artists lumped into sort artist groups?

The 2nd suggestion you speak of I'm having trouble wrapping my head around. I definitely don't care about genre tags or grouping at all. Are you saying that using my example I would have a genre category of "Sting" and would edit the Doors album so that it is the "Sting genre" and thus every Album Artist Doors release will point to this genre and thus genre category going forward?

Is there any limit to the number of these genres I could create? I would need s that's for sure. If my understanding of your first suggestion is correct then I guess I'm accomplishing the same feat in both instances? After some initial work of getting the album artists properly linked - from that point i'll be able to navigate the buckets I wish to see at the left and all new incoming releases will automatically hit the right buckets If they both accomplish the same result I think I would rather stick with "sort album artist" this way in most cases I can get a relevant picture in that list to the left.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me - I can't say how much all of this affects my emotions and being. Reply 8 on: March 29, , AM. There's a lot going on in your post and I'm not sure if I've caught so if it, but I think basically yes. MusicBee sees them the same. And composers, unless you've specified a separate Composer sure value. Just be aware this could have unintended consequences, because it will affect sorting just about everywhere, such as the column browser.

Play with it and see. Because all instances of an artist are affected, it's easy to undo by clearing all your sort tags at once.

Mp3tag has is not specially designed for any specific player and as you have experienced, there are no fixed rules which all players follow at the way they treat and support tag fields. In order to optimize your files for your players, you have to know what tag fields are supported and how they are treated. That's what I have described for the players I have tested. My built in Droid media player seem to be different from yours. I have dupicates in the artst list where the same artist appears with different featurings.

And it seems there is nothing I can change about that. But that ater of course the very last solutions. And before spoiling all my tags with something like that, I rather forgo sorting correctly by album artist on my mobile player but keep the correct tag fields on my big archive at home.

That field has been introduced by itunes, as far as I know, so it should be supported. Enter the value "1" for compilations and leave it empty or enter "0" for standard albums. When you want the different featuring artists in the ARTIST field, you have to treat the album technically as compilation, because it has different artists. I forgot to mention, I have Cyanogenmod 7 on my droid so that is probably why.

I was disappointed to see that Winamp does not support it. It appears that a lot of players use the artist field to in the filter list by artist. I might just do it the incorrect way so it shows up correct on majority of devices and players I use. I wish I could have it the right way and have it read correctly on my devices but whats the point of organizing it if it doesn't work right on the device. As I mentioned I was using Winamp for some cool desktop features I then tried PowerAMP theres a free and paid, i used free which had even cooler features but still no luck.

I am not sure what happens on the 8th day, if you cant use the app or cannot use more advanced features but it claims to support the correct tags but have not tried for myself yet. I am getting to the point where I might just do your second suggestion and eliminate the album artist field or more likely just duplicate artist and album artist.

Side note, big fan of musiXmatch app which finds lyrics as the song starts playing. Another 2 apps might be worth looking into are MusicBrainz and Discogs. I've noticed there are a ton of on device music tag editor.

I tried one and even they dont have the artist listed the way I want. Can you give me some basic tips and tricks for using MP3Tag? I've been using musicbrainz under tag sources to look up entire album information. Besides that, adding album cover and manually changing the fields, I dont know anything else. Is there an easy way to have MP3Tag swap the data in artist for album artist without doing it one by one?

How do I have it set my file names to follow the following format:. The point for me is, that I want to keep my collection clean and usable on as many devices as possible.

But I also don't want to loose any information. I consider the Albumartist as very important for sorting and finding release. And I mainly do that on my laptop. For the complexity of it and the enormous amount of storage space, I think the laptop will be my main device for the next ten years or so. And almost all software players for windows comupter support Albumartist.

So, to put it short, I hope that Android will support it at some point at the future. I'm almost sure they will do. You can't get over it once you seriously think about music database structures. I tested it and even got the full version.
