Because smart phone keyboards are so tiny and close together, autocorrect suggests alternative words that contain letters near the letters in the misspelled word.
This means the range of error is much larger than with traditional autocorrect which is relying primarily on a dictionary and grammatical algorithms, rather than on letter proximity.
Maybe this all means that we should read our e-mails and text messages ourselves before hitting send. How do you technically describe what autocorrect does? Metathesis is the changing of one letter or sound for another letter or sound. Epenthesis is the insertion of a vowel in the middle of a word, more broadly called epenthesis.
A paragoge is an addition of a sound at the end of a word, rather than the middle. Right-click a word while typing in a Google document and select "AutoCorrect" to view a list of correction choices. If you select "Always Correct To" from the menu, Google Docs corrects a specific word automatically when you type it.
You'll find this feature useful if you misspell some words frequently. Turn auto-correct off for a specific word by selecting "Preferences" from the "Tools" menu and removing the check mark from the check box next to the desired word. Calculators help people manage numbers faster and more productively.
However, dependence on calculators may cause some people to lose their arithmetic skills. The same principles can apply to spelling when people no longer need to remember how to spell complex words such as Massachusetts; Google auto-correct spells it for them. While auto-correct features are useful, computers are fallible and they won't always predict the word you're seeking correctly.
