They finally succeed in defeating the beast, though Yamasaki is killed saving Kato. In Gantz 0's ending, the survivors are warped back to Gantz's apartment, and Kato learns he scored points for the mission. He's presented with the option of earning his freedom and having his memory of the whole nightmare wiped, or resurrecting a dead player.
Naturally, he decides to bring Yamasaki back to life. He's then allowed to leave but Gantz will call him back at some point for another mission. Then the other players reveal the surprise plot twist that Kato played the game once before, but he didn't remember because his memory was erased.
His decision to save someone else instead of earning his freedom isn't a surprise to them either. Which is what the series was like. Lets just hit you with a sledge hammer. Joined: 30 Mar Posts: I came to a similar conclusion to that of opaquescum's, albeit not quite as deep.
As for everyone else, tough luck, the game's not easy I do think Gantz purposely delayed the sending to let Katou and Mika die, though I pretty much hated Gantz myself. Though it's mostly for the second season's wasted potential and the fact the only two characters that I liked were killed off. It's a series dripping with malice for humanity, and devoid of hope. I don't know, I just didn't like how it felt really. On top of that the main mystery is never explained and it's hard to care about a main character who's just a shallow jerk most of the time.
Joined: 25 Jun Posts: 1. Regardless of the reasons Gantz ended, or why, I have to say I like the ending. It may not have remained consistant with the style or story of the rest of the series, but it still anchored on the deep psychological meaning beyond simply what you see, and that's why I liked the entire series anyway.
I'm going to explain the gantz ending, but first, I need to share a few conclusions I came to throughout the series that leads me to my theory on the show's ending: spoiler[ 1: Gantz was created by, and works for, a higher power.
He has a job, he has great abilities, he's part computer, and he goes and gathers people to eliminate aliens in a highly developed, organized manner. So it's most likely that some species, maybe aliens, maybe the government, who it is doesn't matter, created Gantz. What matters is that Gantz is following orders. However, whoever they are, they're the ones receiving any aliens "sent" by the triangle gun.
Maybe not in the literal sense, because the creepy guy poked his ear and stuff showed up on screen, so he could be a cyborg, but he has a brain. Gantz has a sense of humor, and there was a person inside the ball, the other reason I think Gantz is a person is the ending, which I'll explain to you in a moment. For short, she is gantz. The creepy dude said Kei was scanned before he got teleported to the apartment, and he recalled that old lady specifically. So I think the old lady is either an illusion or some piece of equipment gantz sends out to scan each person when they're about to die so he can, quote unquote, "fax" them into the apartment.
Now, the ending. When Kei was first faxed in, or perhaps over time as kei completed missions, Gantz came to respect Kei. Whether it was his determination, his will to live, or simply his attitude, Gantz felt Kei wasn't just another person to kill aliens. So, when Kei told the old lady AKA Gantz to screw off, and figure it out on her own, Gantz came to the realization that he doesn't specifically need directions.
He can think for himself. He has a free will. He wanted to be destroyed, he didn't want to continue making people hunt aliens. The reason could be that he feels sickened by the way he lives, stuck inside a ball, with nothing to do but what he's told.
Perhaps the reason is because so many people died because of what he asked them to go out and do. The reason Gantz decided not to follow orders doesn't really matter, what does matter is what he decided to do after that.
Gantz felt the need to end the meaningless cycle of death, and so, when everyone showed up, he told them to hunt Kei. He knew that by doing this, everyone would be confused, they'd conflict, they wouldn't trust each other. But most importantly, Kei would get pissed at him and try to kill him. He knew that Kei probably partly blamed Gantz for his friends dying, because of what Gantz had put them through, and by targeting Kei, he knew he could convince kei to attack him.
That is the story of the ending. That is what happened, Gantz convinced Kei to end his existance. I don't know if Kei is alive, there are several possibilities and no way to divine which one was true.
Kei could've been dead from the moment Gantz picked him up for the missions, and since Gantz was dead at the end, he could no longer "fax" Kei to keep him alive. Another possibility is that kei barely survived the train, and was in the hospital, and the entire series was simply a "dream" of sorts.
The third possiblity is that once Kei defeated Gantz by standing up to the train don't ask me how the fk he killed Gantz by going all spike on the train, I don't know he simply survived, and was standing in the real world. The fourth possibility, and the one I liked the least, is that when Kei defeated Gantz, he got hit by the train again and really did die this time.
As for the 2 psycho killers being part of that, I don't believe they were there because of Gantz's doing, Gantz just picked up people about to die as he always does. However, they did have a purpose, and that purpose was to destroy the remainder of Kei's hope, and cement his determination to kill Gantz.
By killing everyone else, the killers removed the possibility of everyone simply working together, and not doing anything about Gantz's orders, leaving Kei with no option but to face and destroy Gantz. On a completely unrelated note, you may also be wondering whether or not Kei was dead, that answer is simple and complicated at the same time. Kei died. But before Kei died, Gantz faxed him into the apartment.
The replica was created by Gantz in the apartment. So yes, Kei was alive, but every time Gantz "faxed" Kei somewhere, it destroyed his current body, and created a new one where Kei was being "faxed" to. So in a way, Kei was still alive, but had died like, 7 or 8 times. It's a pretty ridiculous concept to grasp, but if you have the imagination to do it, it makes sense.
The prestige had a situation similar to this, if you've seen that movie. Great movie. Joined: 12 Jun Posts: I really wish Madhouse had been chosen to animate Gantz instead.
If they had handled it like Black Lagoon, they could've done several episode seasons with great pacing, and probably gotten further in the manga than Gonzo did.
They get easily defeated by getting sliced to multiple pieces by Kannon's sword. The one with the blond hair. A friend of Tomao, he fights the smaller aliens without a suit and surprisingly defeats some. After he found his Gantz suit, he tries to confront the boss alien with Tomao. The skinny guy with glasses. He mysteriously disappears during the mission. At the final battle with Kato, it was revealed that he was swallowed and possessed by Kannon. He gets killed by Kato when he was alien form.
A Buddhist priest who tries to convince the hunters that they're in hell, and is constantly criticizing the veteran hunters. He gets killed by the Rowdy alien by getting his body crushed by it's hand. A black belt martial artist. He fights the smaller aliens without the suit and manages to defeat some. He gets killed by one of Kannon's guards by getting his neck snapped. A white-collar worker. He never fights any of aliens and tries to leave.
His head gets blown off by Gantz because he left the "playing zone". A middle aged bookstore owner that has been shown throughout the anime. One night a guy came inside his store and stole his merchandise. Furuta enraged, he chased after the shoplifter but Furuta then got hit by car and got killed.
During the mission, Furuta discouraged violence and tried to talk to everyone, he also showed sympathy towards Hajime because he believed that he was brainwashed by Ryuji. After the death of Saito, he realized that Hajime was never brainwashed and that Hajime was just a cold-blooded murder. Determined to stop him, he went to confront Hajime and Mika decided to go with him. Just as he was about to shoot Hajime with the X-gun, Hajime grabbed an uzi and shot off Furuta's arms.
Furuta, down on the ground and unable to defend himself, Hajime took a grenade and stuffed it inside Furuta's mouth, and tied a string to the pin of grenade and tied the other end to Mika's neck, so if she moved, he would die. To torture Mika and Furuta, Hajime took a leather belt from a gun and continued to beat Mika to make her move. Furuta, determined to save Mika pulled away from Mika and blew up.
Seriously injuring Hajime and killing himself. A year old cold-blooded murder who enjoyed going bum-hunting, along with Hajime. Before Gantz, he was killed by the police by getting shot up multiple times. He acts cool and collected to fool the other hunters to think he was normal. After Kurono's confrontation with the other hunters, Ryuji was determined to kill Kurono, and thus revealed the murderous side of him.
To add to his madness, Ryuji and Hajime took Yoshino hostage and sexually assaulted her. In self-defense, Yoshino took a kitchen knife and cuts Ryuji's forehead. Enraged and determined to end everything, he tries to kill the other hunters. Kurono and Nozaki then confront Ryuji for the final time. Ryuji then takes an assault rifle and tries to kill Kurono, but Nozaki stands in front of Kurono and sacrfices his life to save Kurono.
Out of bullets and determined to kill Kurono, he strapped himself with grenades and blows himself up, but fails in killing Kurono. A young teenager who is sadistic and a cold-blooded killer. Along with Ryuji, he gets killed by the police by getting shot up. During the mission he tries to play innocent and acts like that Ryuji brainwashed him to kill people when in reality he enjoys killing and feels no remorse. Determined to kill the other Gantz members for no reason he kidnaps Yoshino and sexually assaults her, after she cuts Ryuji, he takes the X-gun and kills Yoshino and laughs while he is killing her.
In the fight at the bar, he tricks Furuta to think that he is innocent, immediately afterwards he takes an rpg and kills Saito.
He then runs away and shortly after is confronted by Furuta and Mika. He takes an uzi and shoots off Furuta's arms and takes a grenade and stuffs it in the old man's mouth, he then ties a string from the pin and wraps it around Mika's neck. He then continues to torture Mika to make her move so the grenade can blow up. To save Mika's life, Furuta tries to kill Hajime by sacrificing himself, he fails but seriously injures Hajime.
With half of his face disfigured, Mika takes advantage to overpower Hajime, but he then shoots her with the uzi. He is then confronted by Kurono, after the fight Kurono shoots Hajime with the y-gun and Hajime gets sent away. For instance there could have been a great narrative there where the Gods explain that the giant race are unbalancing the universe with their arrogance and consumption and destroy everywhere they settle.
To correct this the gods chose humanity to combat them because they are in many ways similar to the Giant race but still have Compassion.
By pitting the Giants against the humans it serves to hold up a mirror to each other showing what the giants lost somewhere along the way and warning humanity of what they could become in an effort to divert and follow a different path. The god aliens could be impassive to who wins knowing that the meeting of the two races will forever change the other win lose or draw.
The idea to give the technology that surpasses the giant's own technology to the humans was to put both races on even playing fields. After said briefing there would be little time for reunions but there would be some really amazing emotional dynamics and scenes throughout the course of the conflict with the giants that could occur between the Gantzers that died and those that survived and it would have been interesting seeing who survived and who dies throughout the conflict.
Maybe one of the ways humanity beats the Giants is when the Vampires and the other aliens residing on the planet decide to declare a truce and come together to fight the Giant invasion as it is clear they will be exterminated along with the humans. That would actually give some meaning to the entire vampire arc vs being completely pointless at the end. Other interesting concepts could also be explored such as how does humanity cope with their new "infinite lives" system.
How it was compromised at one point in the story by the giants taking out a satillite etc. Complex concepts regarding IF something should be done regardless if we CAN do it could also be explored. Also the concept of clones and duplicity as well as coming to grips with our own mortality and how we are just biological versions of the machines we create.
There could have been an amazing moment between the resurrected Gantz Kishimoto and the original Kei. Seeing herself fighting monsters and realizing she had strength she never new she had He could have even explored the concept of "data merging" two "Data Souls" together into one similar to merging folders on a computer.
In short the concept was solid because there is such a multitude of narratives, scenes and stories that could come out a fully fleshed out version of it.
The Manga could have easily been over chapters but I think that the author and publisher were burned out on the series and perhaps it just wasn't getting the audience it used to in order to justify continued publication. Instead it was rushed to the finish line and given absolutely no proper send off in order to wrap it up. Alas I think we all wanted Gantz to end better Was reading it from time to time and really did enjoy its boldness.
Just finished the manga. Am i the only one on Earth thinking they all died at the end? It was as well a satyr of the author. An entire world was on the verge of destruction , so earth being in danger was kind of meaningless, when you compare it to the mothership which hosts an entire civilisation of its own.. After the alien ship trigger its autodestruction mode, kei and the others are sent into space.
They have hope, so it's normal they fight till the last seconds to get a chance of survival Now about that scene when they magically float on a sea. It's totally dark. I think for me they both died. And even maybe the conception of some kind of "paradise". Where all their desires comes true. Notice how everything is rushed, and more importantly, how tae chan and kato's brother appears magically to hold them back when they were falling?
Idk, i read that in that way and i'm confused cause if this is true , that means it's genius. But if indeed that's a happy ending i agree with everything you guys said , and it's just a lazy ending and writing I felt it so rushed too ending like that, yet, the ending is a very ironic one, and every place I read any comments on this ending, nobody seems to realise that the Aliens invading earth, all of them are dead, not all of them bad, and the "happy ending" is in contrast to that.
The ending is actually bittersweet. Its like anything on the alien side wasn't really fleshed out. So much of it was good though D;. I was finished reading the manga a little over 2 years ago and forgot many things. So i was browsing around the internet for a summary and came across your review. Well fucking said, man. I too think that the enging was kind of abrubt, although at the time i didn't have mch problem with the room of truth, i just thought it was weird and somewhat unecessary.
I don't mind happy endings that much, but I doo see a lot of contrast between the tone of the whole story and the very endding. It just doesn't feel like it belings to this story. Just finished it today in a sitting and personally I've been wanting sort of an epilogue or an after-story or whatever for the characters, especially for reika and kei 2.
It's still leaving a me with a really nasty aftertaste even after days because reika is without a doubt one of the most prominent female members of gantz throughout the series, and she's just a really well-made character.
The author just isn't doing that couple justice imo reika doesn't even have screentime for her final battle to save kei 2, or even a decent farewell , and that final reunion in that room when the gods resurrected her was just heartbreaking. The daughter of the very rich man, that Sebastion the freelace reporter had to visit in germany, is the medium for the blueprints that were sent to earth by the godlike aliens in the room of truth.
These blueprints were sent to Earth in hopes of giving the inhabitants of Earth a fighting chance, this was seen as a way to give balance to everything. What i don't get is the "do you feel god? That was said by an alien that based its attacks on how you percieve him to attack. Then that same quote was asked by the German man to Sebastion and then the german guy gets trasnported away, gantz style.
My thoughts on the matter are that the alien that they fought in Osaka that killed you the way you percieved it attacking you, was actually the alien species that was in the truth room. This of course opens the theory that the truth god is a shapeshifter and can appear as any form, e.
I also feel that it's important to add that when team Tokyo Katou and party shows up on the mothership of the giants, there are a lot of people doing waaaay awful and horrible things to the aliens and then others who run off to seek this knowledge thay everyone already seems to know about. Considering the flow of the comic, it doesn't seem unlikely that could have happened.
So now you have other people hearing about this truth that they can figure out by passing through with gantz to an unknown area with the answer to everything. Now the real question is why? Why is it that these people can all of a sudden have a chat with god under a lie detector?
The only reason i could think is because truth god wanted to explain to the humans that they arent hot stuff and just dust in the wind. Truth god was waiting for some ass hat to bring up religion or something to at least explain that they arent the center of the universe. Truth god did so by saying there is no god and that we are all just "stuff" and no better than the animals.
Considering the fact that these Truth god aliens had the ability to take out the giants the first time and then have the ability to transend time and space, means that they could have gone to earth and defended it. However they didn't and it is because they can't.
There is this endless being that is trying to keep an alien race of giants from upsetting the balance of the universe. What do they do? They send in brainwaves how to make the Gantz models. They could stop them themselves when the time came, they don't; They could send the technology themselves, they don't; they could just defeat the alien giants so no one else may be taken by them; they don't.
They choose the option that keeps them out of it the most and i would say its because they can't interfere with another planet as long as they are on that planet. Of course this isn't consistent with the story based on that principle alone, essentially there would need to be some exceptions to the rule, but everything that occurred on the mother ship other than that dumb ass final battle seemed congruent to me.
Last notes, i like the quote "Do you feel God? So asking if one can physically feel God from the perspective of what is assume to be the truth god the truth god, he is laughing in thaith.
