What is the difference between nitrates and nitrogen




















I just got the nitrate test results back from the lab and the level was 3, Am I in trouble? Every year I get questions similar to this one from individuals who have just had their forage tested for potential use as a livestock feed. I need to know whether the number they're looking at was reported as nitrates or as nitrate nitrogen. Why is it important to know the difference between nitrate nitrogen and nitrates?

It would be risky for cattle to eat this forage without taking some precautions. However, 3, parts per million of nitrate should not be a problem since this is less than one-third the danger level for nitrates.
